Read our essential guide for top tips on how to keep your fine and fashion jewellery looking as radiant as the day you bought it. Includes advice on how to wear, store, clean and polish.
Wearing Your Jewellery
Remove all jewellery before showering, applying toiletries, using household cleaning products, or swimming in chlorinated water. Exposure to soap or chlorine can tarnish and discolour your jewellery over time.
Refrain from wearing jewellery while doing manual work or heavy exercise.
Silver jewellery is suitable for everyday wear. DO NOT shut your silver away in a box as this may speed up the tarnishing process.
Gold plated jewellery is more suitable for occasional wear.
Storing Your Jewellery
Store your jewellery pieces separately and wrap in soft tissue or cloth to avoid scratches or discolouration.
Cleaning Your Jewellery
We recommend getting your fine jewellery professionally cleaned and assessed at least once a year. Jewellers can also check for any damage, such as loose claws or clasps.
You can clean all your fine jewellery with mild water and soap solution and a soft brush if necessary. Refrain from vigorous scrubbing, as this can damage your jewellery. Dry with a soft lint-free cloth.
For diamond and precious metal jewellery you can also use specialised cleaning products, available to buy at T H Baker.
To clean gold plated jewellery, use a mild soap solution and soft cloth. DO NOT use polishing cloths or cleaning solutions on gold plated or oxidised jewellery.
Polishing Your Jewellery
White gold is coated with rhodium to give it a bright white finish. Over time this rhodium plating can wear off, so we recommend getting your white gold re-rhodium plated every six months.
Other precious metals, including platinum and palladium, may need a polish from time to time.
