Diamond Jewellery Aftercare

Looking after your diamonds is essential if you want them to retain their sparkle and beauty for a lifetime. Whilst all of our T H Baker stores will be happy to help if you take your diamond jewellery to them to be cleaned, there are some things you can do at home to keep your jewellery looking as radiant as the day you bought it. Here we aim to give you all the “dos” and “don’ts” regarding how to clean a diamond ring and other diamond jewellery. You can purchase

DO

Do remove all of your diamond jewellery before going in the shower or going swimming. Soap can cling to diamonds leaving a greasy covering that will affect how your diamond sparkles and the chlorine used in swimming pools can be damaging to all jewellery.

Do keep your diamond jewellery separate from the rest of your jewellery to prevent them becoming scratched or tangled. If you store your jewellery together, wrap them individually in soft tissue or cloth.

Do clean your diamonds regularly to stop them appearing dull. Using a mild soap solution with water, soak your diamond jewellery then use a soft toothbrush to remove any remaining grease or dirt. Carefully rinse with cold water and dry gently using a soft, lint-free cloth. Take care with this as fragile settings can be made worse with vigorous scrubbing.

Do get your diamond jewellery checked. Take your jewellery into one of our stores to have it professionally cleaned and assessed at least once a year. Our friendly team can arrange to have your jewellery cleaned as well as check for any damage to your jewellery that you may not have noticed such as claws becoming loose.

DON'T

Don’t apply makeup, perfume, creams etc whilst wearing your diamond jewellery as these products can leave a layer of oil that will coat your diamonds making them appear dull.

Don’t do housework or manual work whilst wearing your jewellery. Chemicals found in household cleaning products can discolour your diamonds and although diamonds are the hardest of all the gemstones, impacts caused during manual work can increase the risk of your diamond being chipped or cracked.

Don’t regularly touch your diamonds. Over the course of the day our hands gather dirt and grease that will leave a layer on the top of the diamond causing it to lose its sparkle.

Don’t leave your diamond jewellery lying around. For example, many people remove their diamond rings and place them next to the sink whilst washing up – this poses a risk of the ring slipping down the drain.
