The composition of a lab-grown diamond is identical to that of an earth-mined diamond. There are two ways of creating lab-grown diamonds chemical vapour deposition and high-pressure high temperature and both methods are very effective in creating brilliant quality authentic diamonds.
Chemical vapour disposition (CVP) diamonds are created by a minuscule slice of a diamond placed into a chamber and is exposed to carbon-rich gas and then amped to incredibly high temperatures. The carbon gas ionises and the particles stick to the original diamond piece before crystallising into a fully formed diamond.
The high-pressure high-temperature method consists of a method where metal is used. Pure carbon is pressed with a metal cube and then exposed to immense heat and pressure through electric pulses. The carbon breaks down and crystallises into a diamond. Any metal traces are unlikely to be visible to the naked eye.
So, are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds? The simple answer is yes, they are chemically the same, they look and feel the same and, in some cases, they can be more flawless than mined diamonds. The only major differences are the fact they are created in a laboratory rather than on the earth and their price points.
One of the major benefits of a lab-grown diamond is the fact that they tend to be 30% to 50% cheaper than a mined diamond. This means that you can buy a significantly larger diamond for a significantly smaller price and you won't even be able to tell the difference that it’s not mined, another fantastic reason why a lab-grown diamond might be the right kind of diamond for you.
However, laboratory-grown diamonds currently don’t tend to hold their value in comparison to mined diamonds. A lab-grown diamond is brilliant for getting more diamonds for your money but if you plan on reselling at a later date, it is unlikely the diamond will retain its value.
