Diamond Clarity Explained: How to Choose the Right Grade

Diamond clarity guide

When choosing a diamond, clarity is one of the key factors that determines both its beauty and its value. But what does diamond clarity actually mean — and how important is it when buying jewellery you’ll wear and treasure for a lifetime?

In this guide, we explain diamond clarity in simple terms, break down the different clarity grades, and help you decide which grade is right for you — whether you’re choosing an engagement ring, eternity ring, or a timeless diamond pendant.

What Is Diamond Clarity?

Diamond clarity refers to the presence (or absence) of natural imperfections within a diamond. These characteristics are formed as the diamond grows under intense heat and pressure deep within the Earth.

There are two types of imperfections:

  • Inclusions – internal characteristics within the diamond
  • Blemishes – surface features on the diamond

Clarity grading assesses the number, size, location, and visibility of these characteristics when viewed under 10x magnification.

Importantly, most clarity characteristics are invisible to the naked eye — especially in well-chosen diamonds.

The Diamond Clarity Scale Explained

The globally recognised diamond clarity scale is graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and ranges from flawless to included.

1. FL – Flawless

  • No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification
  • Extremely rare and highly valuable
  • Typically chosen for collectors rather than everyday wear

2. IF – Internally Flawless

  • No internal inclusions, only minor surface blemishes
  • Exceptional clarity and brilliance
  • A premium option for those seeking rarity

3. VVS1 & VVS2 – Very, Very Slightly Included

  • Minute inclusions that are extremely difficult to see under magnification
  • Appear completely flawless to the naked eye
  • Ideal for those wanting exceptional quality without the highest price point

4. VS1 & VS2 – Very Slightly Included

  • Minor inclusions visible under magnification but not to the naked eye
  • Excellent balance of beauty and value
  • One of the most popular clarity choices for engagement rings

5. SI1 & SI2 – Slightly Included

  • Inclusions visible under magnification and sometimes faintly to the naked eye
  • Carefully selected SI diamonds can still look stunning
  • A great option for maximising carat size within a set budget

6. I1, I2 & I3 – Included

  • Inclusions visible to the naked eye
  • Can affect brilliance and durability
  • Less commonly chosen for fine jewellery

How Important Is Diamond Clarity?

While clarity matters, it’s important to remember that most inclusions cannot be seen without magnification. A well-cut diamond with a slightly lower clarity grade can still appear beautifully bright and clear.

For many customers, clarity is about finding the right balance — choosing a diamond that looks exceptional without paying for characteristics you’ll never notice.

What Is the Best Diamond Clarity to Choose?

For everyday wear and timeless jewellery, we often recommend:

  • VS1 or VS2 – exceptional clarity with excellent value
  • VVS2 – ideal for those wanting near-flawless quality
  • High-quality SI1 – carefully selected stones that remain eye-clean

These grades offer diamonds that appear flawless to the naked eye while allowing more flexibility for carat size or cut quality.

Does Diamond Shape Affect Clarity?

Yes — different diamond shapes show inclusions differently:

  • Round brilliant diamonds hide inclusions best due to their sparkle
  • Oval, pear and marquise shapes may show inclusions more easily
  • Emerald and Asscher cuts have open facets that highlight clarity more clearly

If you’re choosing a step-cut diamond, a higher clarity grade is often recommended.

Clarity vs Cut: What Matters More?

If you’re prioritising beauty, cut quality often has a greater impact than clarity. A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, enhancing brilliance and disguising inclusions.

Our advice? Choose the best cut possible, then select a clarity grade that remains eye-clean.
