The mystery of pearls
Over the years, pearls have been linked to many myths and legends from all over the world. Each has their own story of how the pearl is formed, and used to benefit its wearer.
In ancient Japan, people believed that pearls we created from the tears of mythological creatures such as mermaids, nymphs and angels, making them highly desirable to the tribes of that time.
In ancient Egypt, Cleopatra was said to have dissolved a pearl from one of her earrings in wine or vinegar (dependant on the scripture), and drank it straight from the glass. Cleopatra did this to show Mark Anthony that she could devour the wealth of a nation in one gulp.
Moving on to symbolism, Ancient Greece believed that pearls were the tears of god. They thought that if a new bride was to wear pearls on her wedding day, they would prevent her from crying.
Pearls also crop up in Christianity, it’s said that when Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden, in the book of Genesis, Eve cried tears of white pearls and Adam cried tears of black, but Adam did not cry as much as eve, which is the reason behind there being fewer black pearls than white.
All very fascinating facts, and you have the option to believe what you will, but another factor you could consider when purchasing a pearl is the colour.
